ST CUTHBERT’S WAY “SOLD OUT”!
ALL AVAILABLE SPOTS FOR THIS ADVENTURE ARE FILLED.
In September 2024, Avon Trail’s Bruce Graham led hikers on the Shropshire Way in England. Now he’s planning an even more ambitious trek from Northern Scotland into Northern England.
Join Bruce and fellow walkers for an unforgettable Scottish Borders adventure—St Cuthbert’s Way from Melrose in Scotland to Lindisfarne in Northern England.
Dates: April 11 through April 20, 2026

Follow in the footsteps of the 7th-century monk, Saint Cuthbert, on this spectacular 120-kilometre route through the wild beauty of the Scottish Borders and Northumberland coast. (You can click here to view a map of the route.)
Starting in the historic town of Melrose, we’ll traverse ancient landscapes steeped in history and legend. Our journey takes us through the dramatic Cheviot Hills, beside farmland, and along river valleys before reaching the stunning tidal island of Lindisfarne (Holy Island) on the English coast.
Our route winds up and down through the windswept Cheviots—that wild backbone separating Scotland and England—where curlews cry over empty moorland, and only sheep tracks break the heather. In late April, watch for lambing in the valley pastures, early wildflowers, and dramatic weather rolling in from the North Sea.
The journey transforms as we descend toward the coast: rolling farmland gives way to tidal marshes, and finally, that extraordinary moment when Lindisfarne emerges from the sea mist, its castle and priory standing sentinel on the Holy Island.
Each evening, you’ll experience Border hospitality in traditional inns and guesthouses, with meals at local pubs or eateries. You’ll find fixings for lunches at local shops.
Come prepared: pack layers, waterproofs, and your sense of adventure. April weather in the Borders is famously unpredictable—and that’s what makes it memorable!
For walkers seeking: Authentic wilderness, cultural depth, and landscapes that stay with you long after the walk ends.
Suitable for: Fit walkers comfortable with 5-8 hours of walking daily over varied terrain.
