Description
To celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 70th year as our monarch, we will meet and hike for three consecutive days: The meeting time: is 8:15 am daily. Meeting place: Allman Arena, 15 Morenz Drive, Stratford. Each hiking day will have a particular theme:
Day 1: Theme – The first 24 years of the Queen’s reign. After a 30-minute bus ride to the western terminus of the Avon Trail in St. Marys, we follow the Thames River passing the Trestle Bridge and the original train station (now the Broken Rail Brewery), heading east. We pass through rolling farmland and then enter the wooded Wildwood Conservation Area. We will see a sulphur spring and get good views of Wildwood Lake. Total Distance: 24.2 km. Included: Bus ride to St.Marys, return trip to Stratford at the end of the hike, snacks and water, all with a certified hike leader. A drop-out ride back is possible.
Day 2: Theme – The Queen’s reign from 1977 to 1998. After a 30-minute bus ride, we are dropped near Berlett’s Corners, where the day’s hike will begin. We will cross the Bamberg Creek heading westwards through charming woodlots. We will get high views of the Nith River and broad vistas over farms. We will visit a small cemetery and an orchard. Today’s hike will end at Amulree. Total distance: 22.0 km. Included: Bus ride to Berlett’s Corners, return trip to Stratford at the end of the hike, snacks and water, all with a certified hike leader. A drop-out ride back is possible.
Day 3: Theme – The Queen’s reign from 1999 to 2022. After a 15-minute bus ride, we return to Amulree and continue our journey westward on our final day. We will follow forested trails and pass a quarry, and may see cattle along the route. After passing through a cedar bush, we join the Avon River, which we follow into downtown Stratford. We will walk around Lake Victoria and finish at the Allman Arena. Immediately following, we will be invited to a nearby home for a celebratory gathering! Total distance: 22.0 km. Included: Bus ride to Amulree, snacks and water, all with a certified hike leader. Drinks and finger food at a local home. A drop-out ride back is possible.
